Hotel Restaurant Lasretti

DESCRIPTION

The Lasaretti Hotel-Restaurant is located in a beautiful park area the Lasaretinsaari on the shore of the Oulu River. The centre of Oulu is still only a short walk away.

In the same park area with the Lasaretti Hotel are the popular attractions of the Northern Ostrotorthia Museum, Oulu Art Museum and Hupisaaret Summer Theatre. The Tietomaa Science Centre is also located nearby. Next to Lasaretti is unique fish ladder used by salmon and other fish when travelling upstream on the Oulu River from the sea.

Lasaretti has been dubbed “the most artistic hotel in Finland” and for good reason. The meeting facilities, restaurant and hotel rooms and even the forecourt brim with an ample and comprehensive collection of paintings and sculptures. All of the featured artists were either born or are currently living and working in Northern Finland.

Restaurant
It is hard to measure how much French, Russian and Italian influence there is in the dishes served at Lasaretti Restaurant. But one thing at least is certain: our cooking is definitely influenced by Oulu and Finland – and our cuisine is definitely unique. We only use the highest quality ingredients, sourced from local suppliers, which gives our food its distinctive character. We take pride in our kitchen, and our passion has not gone unnoticed. Amongst our admirers is the international gastronomic society, Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, which in 2007 awarded us its valued escutcheons in recognition of the passion we invest in our cooking.

What is it that gives the town of Oulu its character? One important factor is the river delta – the town is located at the spot where the Oulu River meets the sea. Human effort has engineered quite a beautiful meeting place for the two: the entire district of Koskikeskus was designed by the celebrated Finnish architect Alvar Aalto himself. A little further up, a dam breaks up the river, leaving behind a delightful array of small islands and brooks just in front of the town centre. The little islands are all unique: One has housing while another is home to a dance pavilion. There is a sports centre on one and an art museum on another. One houses the ruins of an ancient castle and another sprouts experimental buildings left behind by a recent housing fair. Water gives way to land and land gives way to water, making the river delta beautiful in summer and winter alike. The coexistence of the two elements is also the reason for the many bridges that are so characteristic of the town!

And then there is Hupisaaret Park, a cluster of even thinner ribbons of land interspersed with slender streams, home to museums, outdoor theatre and dainty white bridges. And one of these little ribbons is Lasaretinsaari Island, which is where we are.

The name of the town, Oulu, means ‘flood’ in the language of the Sami, the indigenous people of northern Europe.
